From Piraeus to Cape Sounio, there is a 60 kilometers coastal area which is known for its beaches, beach bars, night clubs, luxury resorts, taverns. You can choose an organized or free access beach, to enjoy a swim or a sun bathing. An interesting option is also "Lake Vouliagmeni".
The lagoon formed about 2,000 years ago. The lake has quite unique environmental conditions: it is supplied with warm seawater (28-35°C) via an underground network of caves, so its temperature never drops below 18 °C (usually ranges around 21-24 °C), whereas a freshwater spring reduces its salinity to brackish levels (14.5-18 psu). Because of its constant warm water temperature and its content in hydrogen sulfide, it functions as a spa since the 19th century. Phone reservation is recommended
The Temple of Poseidon at Sounion was constructed in 444–440 BC. Cape Sounio (Capo Colonne "Cape of Columns") is the promontory at the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula, 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) south of the town of Lavrio (ancient Thoricus), and 69.5 km (43.1 miles) southeast of Athens in the Athens Riviera. In Greek mythology, Aegeus the father of Theseus committed suicide falling himself from these rocks and gave his name to the Aegean Sea. The Temple of Poseidon was very important for Athens, since they could monitor the ships coming in and out of Athens. They also extracted Silver from the mines at Lavrio (the ancient village of Thoricus).
The modern town of Lavrio is one of the three main ports of Athens and is located at the site of the ancient village of Thoricus; Its name is taken from that of the entire region of the Mines of Laurium. The earliest evidence for mining dates to the beginning of the Bronze Age, ca. 3200 BC. Systematic exploitation of mineral resources have begun in the 6th century BC under Peisistratus. After the battle of Marathon, Themistocles persuaded the Athenians to devote the anticipated revenue derived from a major silver vein strike in the mines of Laurion circa 483 BC to expanding the Athenian fleet to 200 triremes, and thus laid the foundation of the Athenian naval power.
